Yogyakarta has more than just culture though. It is a very lively city and a shopper's delight. Head out to the famous Lake Toba for a good chill and relax by the largest volcanic lake, 4 hours drive away by land.
For a quick getaway at Berastagi, famous for locals, about 1.5 hours drive away. You can view the two nearby volcanoes, Sinabung and Sibayak.
There are also some large, multi-storey shopping complexes within Medan, which usually stay open until late and feature their very own, well-stocked Carrefour supermarkets. The city's best shopping centres include the Medan Mall, the Medan Fair Plaza and the Sun Plaza.

Today, with a population of over 5 million people, it remains the largest city and main economic hub of Myanmar.
See Bogyoke Aung San Market (10) (Bo Gyoke Road), founded by the British as Scott Market, is the place to find anything from traditional Burmese jade, lacquer, puppets or teak carvings, to sarong-like longyis. Wander deep into the central alleys to find vendors busily trading in gold.
Saunter along the waterside path through lush gardens fringing enormous Inya Lake, an expansive reservoir at the heart of the city.
